A recent study has revealed that Uber added about ₦34 billion to Nigeria’s economy in 2023. The findings come from the “Uber Nigeria Economic Impact Report,” carried out by Public First and presented at the Lagos Road Mobility Summit.

The report highlights that this contribution includes not only revenue but also significant value in consumer savings, time saved, safety benefits, and income gains for drivers. Riders reportedly enjoyed a consumer surplus of nearly ₦500 billion—these are savings in cost, time, and convenience. Meanwhile, drivers on the platform earned ₦6.1 billion more in 2023 compared to what they might have earned using their next best alternative. On average, Uber drivers in 2023 earned 34 per cent higher than in the closest competing gig or transport opportunity.

Flexibility emerged as a key factor: about 88 per cent of drivers said being able to set their own hours helped them balance work with family responsibilities. Riders also cited safety and convenience as major reasons for choosing Uber, with 97 per cent saying safety was a primary concern, and 78 per cent of women stating the service was the safest way home at night. The service was also credited with helping reduce drunk driving through reliable nighttime travel options.

Beyond individual benefits, Uber’s presence reportedly contributed close to ₦930 million to Nigeria’s nighttime economy and added ₦5.4 billion in value to tourism. The report noted that riders collectively saved over 1.8 million hours in 2023—hours that could instead be used for work, rest, or other personal activities. Major stakeholders at the Summit—including government transport agencies and safety experts—praised the report and called for more public-private collaboration to expand safe, convenient mobility.
