A devastating fire at Afriland Towers on Broad Street in Lagos Island has claimed the lives of 10 staff members from United Capital Plc and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), authorities and company statements confirm.

The blaze broke out just before 1 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, in the basement inverter room of the six-storey Afriland Tower building, which houses multiple offices. Thick smoke spread rapidly through the upper levels, forcing workers to escape through windows and balconies.

FIRS confirmed that four of its staff died in the fire. The victims include Mrs Ekelikhostse George (Assistant Director), Mr David Sunday-Jatto (Assistant Director), Mrs Nkem Onyemelukwe (Senior Manager), and Mr Peter Ifaranmaye (Manager), who were working on the affected floors at the time of the incident.

United Capital mourned six of its employees, stating that they were “integral parts” of its workforce, adding that their loss has left an “immeasurable void.” The firm announced plans to hold a memorial service and pledged support for the families of the victims.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that the fire originated in the building’s basement inverter room. Security officials were alerted early, but the rapid spread of smoke impeded rescue efforts. Many occupants were seen escaping through windows, while others stayed trapped before rescue operations could reach them.

Both FIRS and United Capital are investigating the safety procedures of their offices nationwide. FIRS, in its statement, said it’s collaborating with Lagos authorities and its internal safety teams to identify any lapses.
