Guinness World Records (GWR) has officially recognised Nigerian chef Hilda Effiong Bassey, popularly known as Hilda Baci, for cooking the world’s largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice.

The confirmation came after weeks of anticipation following Baci’s bold attempt at the “Gino World Jollof Festival” held at Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. GWR announced that the serving weighed 8,780 kilograms (19,356 lb 9 oz), making it the largest of its kind ever recorded.

The feat involved a custom-made pot measuring about six metres in diameter, originally designed to hold up to 5,000 kilograms of rice but scaled back to 4,000 kilograms due to technical constraints. Despite setbacks, including a partial collapse of the support structure during weighing, Baci and her team successfully cooked and served thousands of portions to more than 20,000 attendees.

Baci, who previously set the 2023 record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual, said the attempt was not about profit but about culture and community. “This is not just a record attempt; it is a celebration of our culture. Importantly, the servings are free,” she told reporters, adding that she personally ensured the pot was “squeaky clean” before cooking began.

The recognition cements Hilda Baci’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most prominent culinary figures, marking her second Guinness World Record in two years.
