The Lagos State Government has issued a directive requiring all courier and delivery riders to wear reflective jackets and have reflective tapes on their vehicles when operating between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. The move is part of a safety policy aimed at reducing road accidents involving dispatch riders.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Transportation, riders on motorcycles and bicycles must be outfitted with visibility tapes or markers. The directive was issued under the authority of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Olawale Musa, following a policy proposal by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport Education and Innovation, Mr Oluwatobi Idowu.

Delivery companies have been urged to sensitise their riders about the new safety requirements and face sanctions from enforcement agencies, including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), should they fail to comply.

The policy is viewed by many as a necessary response to the increasing number of road accidents involving courier riders at night, largely due to low visibility. Advocates say that reflective gear and better visibility can significantly reduce crashes and improve safety for both riders and other road users.
